Very sad to hear of Anthony Minghella’s death, especially as he came from my home county of the Isle of Wight and I’ll never forget that great Oscar speech when he said ‘This is a great day for the Isle of Wight!’
A nebulous claim to fame I have is that my step-grandmother was Anthony’s violin teacher!

Proper Cynic

Call that cynicism? Fuck’s sake. You useless, boring twat. I don’t give a fuck if your grandad’s new wife once met a bloke who made shit films. Everyone you know is rubbish. Everything you do is worthless so there’s no point doing it. Your life is a homogenous grey expanse of decaffeinated, low-fat, plastic. If you gave up RIGHT NOW and tried to die of “nothing in particular”, you’d be shit at that too.

See? That’s cynicism. Or maybe it’s just abuse. I don’t know. I don’t care. Everything’s shit. Fuck off.

I’ll be alright in a few days. Just need a brief refractory period before I can really put my heart into it again.

If you’re feeling fragile, don’t accidentally read Simon Heffer’s column in the Telegraph today, or indeed the comments underneath it. You’ll just want to end it all. Instantly.

Hmm - seems to be that Bloc may have been a bit heavy on you Nelson…

(I am seething with jealous rage by the way… bastard)

Simon Heffer, for the less fragile:

The Minghella and Clarke tributes are a goldmine of permanently bewildered, self appointed sages and grief athletes with delusions of grandeur.

Then there is Mike Borel. He just doesn’t give a hoot.

    DEBATE:Anthony Minghella: Your reaction

    COMMENT:Who cares?

He cares so little he felt the need to make everyone aware of his uncaringness in two separate debates.

Perhaps the author means “Proper Cynic” in terms of the ancient school of Philosophy which is actually from the Greek for “dog-like”. To quote Wikipedia (sorry I have nothing better to hand): “A Cynic declared that ‘other dogs bite their enemies, I bite my friends to save them.’”

So I can see how a “Proper Cynic” can be a cynic while still thinking that Minghella’s Minging films are any good.

“The road to Virtue is to free oneself from any influence such as wealth, fame, or power, which have no value in Nature.” And that is what Anthony has done by dying. WELL DONE ANTHONY.

“He cares so little he felt the need to make everyone aware of his uncaringness in two separate debates.”

Mike Borel is a true cynic, as he “rejects all conventional values of money, fame, power or reputation”. Who cares if a rich, famous man has died?

Who cares if two have died?

What does Mike Borel think about Captain Birdseye’s passing?

    I don’t think he’d care.

Actually Anthony Minghella kept me out of jail. I was staying with my mother one Christmas and we rented the video of *The English Patient* and it was only because I fell asleep through boredom that I refrained from matricide that Yule. Didn’t know until today he was the cunt who directed it though.

Thank you Chris, for pointing me at Simon Heffers column.

I was particularly impressed by the manner in whch he implies (by a conversational, first-hand style) that he was present at various events in Iraq, when it’s obvious that he wasn’t, and couldn’t have been.

    A cock.

    Of the first order.

    Sublime.

Nelson, is your cynicism due to the fact that your fantastic idea to mock these twats has been ripped off in Private Eye?

I’ve not seen the latest issue yet, so I don’t know if it’s a regular feature, but in the last one (with Harry on the cover) there was a column called “From The Message Boards” full of idiotic comments, piss-poor spelling and mild bigotry.

The didn’t call anyone a Giraffe’s Minge so your still ahead of the game there!

The Have Your Say at the bottom of The Heff’s column actually has the great “if you don’t like it why don’t you… wibble blah froth”:

It’s becoming apparent that none of these riotous labo-marxist never lived before 1979 or they had their buried up their ar**s, as usual. The only rhetoric they come up with is to blame Thatcher and not their marxist agendas.

Mark cooper for heavens sake get a grip and grow up, the party is over in fact it never started. 10 years of deceit and lies is enough.
And as for Rob Crogwood if you don’t like it return to the pages of pravda obviously that’s where your petty marxist drivel belongs.

Also: the Isle of Wight isn’t a county. It’s part of Hampshire.
