Sorry to say, Burnel, there are. There is the American – P, Kohler, Washington, D.C. who goes off on right wing diatribes that are so utterly offensive, smug, and holier than thou I hold him personally responsible for the rise in Anti-Americanism. He has several pseudonyms: P, Kohler, P.C. Kohler, Peter Kohler, Speedbird, Joe Schmoe, and a few others whose names I do not remember at this time. He is a mean spirited son of a bitch who if he decides that he hates you, he will leave what he thinks are anonymous hate comments for you to read in any forum, thinking that will run you off, because it worked on one person he did that to. He started doing to two other people who are regular contributors, but they outwitted him, and got even. Just to let you know P, Kohler, by his own admission, has stated that he works for the US Dept. of Defense in a forum about the Iraq war two years ago. This guy is a fucking bastard.

As someone who was educated in an independent day school in the midlands I feel able to state, quite categorically, that Uppingham has more than its fair share of ‘toffs’. You also find that boarding schools have more ‘toffs’ than day school simply because the toff-parents like to wash their hands of the children for as long as possible so they can swan around the world poking people and asking why they can’t speak a damned word of English.

Fortunately, and I can also state this categorically, that just with cats having four legs and yet not all four-legged animals being cats, all toffs went to private school and yet not all private school pupils are toffs.

Apropos of nothing related to this topic, tonight is the first time I’ve seen this site and at times I’ve been laughing so much my ears almost started bleeding. Methinks I must ration my viewing for fear of permanent hilarity-related injury.

I refer to your comment “your worse than imigrants”. I work with two immigrants from India and can assure you that their spelling and grammar is far superior to yours, as is their attitude. In fact, I’d venture to say that they are generally fantastic people doing a great job and that I’d far rather work with them than than some of the ill-educated prejudiced morons which this country has regrettably produced in recent years. K Jennifer, I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you’re genuine but really have just missed the point. So, I’m going to explain the joke. Explaining a joke is a terrible thing to do and sucks all the life out of the poor thing. But I’m going to do it for you because I care about you more than the joke. If you still don’t get it, you should probably stop reading this site because you’re not going to get anything else. It will all seem unfunny and shit to you and reading it will just make you sadder. I don’t want you to be sad.

Here goes:

The joke is that he’s trying to use the fact someone went to Uppingham to prove that they’re not a toff. Going to Uppingham does not make you a bad person. Stephen Fry went to Uppingham and he is, as far as I can tell, a decent bloke. He’s also far too bright to imagine that attending a famous, well resourced, 400 year old public boarding school is the norm for kids in this country. All this shot completely over the head of the author of the telegraph article who really IS a toff in the bad sense because he doesn’t understand that he’s privileged and that most people attended schools that offer far less opportunity than Uppingham. That’s why it’s funny, and also a little bit tragic.
