This arrest is unfair. War is a nasty business and people get killed - including civilians. Was Winston Churchill a war criminal because of the bombing of Dresden? If you knew Balkan history you would see the war against the Bosnian Muslims was justified. The Serbs are an ancient and proud people. For centuries they lived under the appalling persecution of the Turks. Why should they have lived under Muslim rule in Bosnia again? Bosnia and Kosova will be the new beachheads of Islam in SE Europe.

I’m an expat living in the Netherlands. However, unlike the typical HYS expat I wanted to learn the local language, so I enrolled in Dutch language evening classes at the local college.
One of my classmates was a Bosnian woman who lost her husband and her son at Srebrenica in 1995. The last she ever saw of them was when she got evacuated from the town along with the other women and the children, while her husband and her son were forced to stay behind by the Serb militia.

As for whoever blathered about Churchill in the Great War - his role in the Dardanelles/Gallipoli was peripheral and mainly Naval, where losses were light (ie not in the landings). After that he fought as a captain on the Western Front. I don’t think that makes him a war criminal.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the Dresden bombings and alot of other things in World War Two, I think there is a big diffrence between them and rounding up fleeing civilians and shoting them.

Toby Johnson has some support from Noam Chomsky whom, whilst a bit Marxist for my taste is IMHO one of the cleverest people on the planet. I reached for my copy of his book Failed States after seeing the news tonight so let me try and summarise his position:
The war in Bosnia was purely about NATO and especially American primacy.
Prior to the NATO bombings, there had been around 2000 deaths in the region, 500 of which were down to the Serbs.
Crucially, from his point of view, all the reported atrocities were AFTER and because of the bombings that were justified to prevent the atrocities. We are not all aware of this because we’ve been fed an alternative version of history by our governments.
That’s the short version of his point of view - I suggest you check it out for yourselves.

Churchill had a military career prior to the Great War, mainly in colonial conflicts. He fought in several African campaigns including the second Boer war- in which atrocities were perpetrated against civilians by his regiment. He was also frequently critcised for recklessly endangering the lives of his troops. Whilst in India he was implicated in the organisation of reprisal attacks against Indian civilians after an injured officer was murdered in an ambush. In the Great War he was critical of the policy that non-frontline messes were “dry” and openly admitted that he volunteered his men to the front partly for personal glory - but mainly so he could have a drink.
