Thanks to Schroduck for finding this one and for penning the perfect response to it.

Most recommended comment on the J.D. Salinger RIP thread:

Who cares. He has no importance in my life because I’ve never heard of him. I’m sure I’m not alone on this.
[RockingTheJoint]

[RockingTheJoint] takes empty-box-filling solipsism to new heights here. Not only has he never heard of the guy, nor, by induction, has anyone else in the world.

On the plus side, he’s accidentally just written his obituary.

I do love those HYSers who wear their ignorance like a medal. “Sonny, I got this one while reading a magazine during the moon landing…”

  2. on 02 Feb 2010 at 9:33 am Rumpleforeskin

    Whatever that was…

If it were possible to condense all of the HYS posts into one neat turd, I personally think it would read like this.
There’s no mention of Gordon Clown or NuLiarBore, but as politicians and policies come and go I believe this sums up just how fucking wretched HYS patrons are.

We do read the comments, you know…

On the plus side, you made me think I dreamed this post.

[RockingTheJoint] sums up the description that can be applied to any HYS poster’s funeral.

    Meanwhile Here is another neat turd from the University Cuts! thread;

“Many degrees are worth nothing. The so called in thing and having a degree has become a worthless status symbol. Put the money into worthwhile dgrees and scrap the rest. It would help in those applying for university could spell ad do some simple maths.”

Did you see what he did?

While I can understand the tendency of HYSers to post right wing political drivel – after all, they are all lone warriors in the forever war against the evil enlightenment forces of the Human Rights Army, and their crack troops, the PC Brigade – what puzzles me is their willingness to flaunt their ignorance, and to commend it in each other. The 20 most recommended posts in the Salinger thread were an even split between the “look at me, I’m great because I’ve never heard of him” camp and the “I’m clever because I am bucking the perceived wisdom” school.

Which makes the outbreak of rational comment on the Pratchett Memorial Thread a bit disturbing.

I was in a really horrible club with my mate once, Zens in Dartford – a right shit hole, full of the worst kind of Friday night booze-a-thon thugs and slags. My friend got angry, and started ranting:

“I’m fucking leaving mate, this is shit. All these people are fucking morons, I don’t want to know any of them let alone shag ‘em. Look:”

[Taps nearest woman on the shoulder]

“Have you read The Catcher in the Rye?”

    “No.”

“See! All fucking idiots. Why would I want to talk to a woman who hasn’t even fucking read The Catcher in the Rye?”

I guess drink brings out the best in him. True story though.

    I’m frightened.

Pratchett’s books are above all else cosy and his fans embrace, extend and embody that. Except for the hilariously shocking phrase “the arse of a dead badger”.

Mein Gott! That thread is full of well-presented reasonable arguments too – Nelson, have you switched on the mind control machine and pointed it at the HYSers today??

  17. on 02 Feb 2010 at 1:50 pm Pirate Pete

Actually, on second thought, do you think that the presence of Saint Catherine and others in the thread is having some kind of soporific effect on them? Something’s definitely amiss

Which makes the outbreak of rational comment on the Pratchett Memorial Thread a bit disturbing.

I wasn’t aware of that campaign, and the words ‘Pratchett Memorial Thread’ made me soil my trousers.

  19. on 02 Feb 2010 at 2:15 pm Ugeine

Speaking of that Equality / Relgion argument:

bishops should make their voices heard and defend the faith, as Christian teaching does not undermine or restrict the freedom of others.

That’s not a quote from some HYS idiot, it’s from the Pope.

  20. on 02 Feb 2010 at 2:40 pm Schroduck

I think all the usual HYS wankers on the Terry Pratchett thread have migrated to the Daily Mail. Even that one is, mostly, sensible, except…

… if you’re going to kill yourself anyhow, then please strap some explosives to yourself and give a big hug to OSAMA BIN LADEN and that lot when you detonate yourself.
do us all a favor. make your death meaningful and leave a better world for your children. plus, there’s an enormous reward for people like bin laden dead or alive. your survivors could possibly end up extremely rich. you could be remembered as a hero.

    @ Ugeine

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Pope is in fact a regular HYS idiot & posts using a variety of sock puppets.

  22. on 02 Feb 2010 at 3:15 pm Marx & Sparx

Or further still, perhaps the Pope posts a variety of deposits in sock puppets, I mean all that celibacy, you’d have to wouldn’t you?

I like Catherine’s idea that unless you ‘did’ a book in school, you’re not allowed to read it otherwise.

I like Catherine’s idea that unless you ‘did’ a book in school, you’re not allowed to read it otherwise.

I’m more intrigued by the apparent suggestion that you can’t read a book once the author has died. I don’t think DRM is that bad yet.

What, you mean that this isn’t normal? But that means that politicians and Neil Craig aren’t reading and hanging off my every word!

I just don’t believe it. Next thing you’ll be telling me this nice woman dying of a terminal illness who wants to help me give all her money to a worthy charity is some kind of… Nigerian scammer or something!

Mein Gott! That thread is full of well-presented reasonable arguments too

[PaulAHarris1973] in the “Do equality laws undermine religious freedom?” thread:

No the equalities bill will make Britain a more politically correct place with people shoe horned into jobs because of their age/gender/ethnicity with better candidates sidelined due to positive discrimination.

As for the religious arguments – whilst not a religious person, I feel a little sorry that a tradition lasting thousands of years in some cases can be destroyed by lefty legislation. Doesn’t seem right somehow.

Yeah! What was so bad about slavery, anyway?

No the equalities bill will make Britain a more politically correct place with people shoe horned into jobs because of their age/gender/ethnicity with better candidates sidelined due to positive discrimination.

Regarding ‘equality’ as being the same thing as ‘positive discrimination’ just about sums up the HYS mindset. “How dare they negatively discriminate against my right as an Indigenous English White Male to go straight to the front of the queue?”

Probably not worth trying to be fair to Alan Davies since he wastes his time posting his opinions on websites…er…

    But:

He just might be making a distinction between the legislature and the executive aspects of government.

    Love this blog btw.

  40. on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:38 am Meh

    “Doesn’t seem right somehow.”

This is the exact average length of reflection before making a HYS post: a vaguely disappointed “oh…” with a slightly screwed-up face while you wait to take the teabag out. Then move on to This Life in Metro.

Typical of this Labout government! If basic will do, then they’ll always choose the executive! It’s a travesty what they do with taxpayers money on their so-called “Expenses”! Bring back hanging! Vote BNP!
